Fuerza del Mar

Wind Chime [deconstructed]

Wind chime

Fuerza del Mar is a narrative cross media project that tells the story of the gentrification of Asbury Park, NJ through the lens of a tamale vendor, Maria Guadalupe Figueroa. Maria, who is also my grandmother, sold homemade tamales out of a shopping cart up and down Main Street in Asbury Park for over 10 years. Telling her story through a design medium, I constructed a wind chime with a visual language that reflects both her narrative and the narrative of the beach town. The medium’s function interacting with the wind further plays into the narrative about change in this location of coastal winds. The base and hanging strikers of the wind chime were entirely constructed using laser etched/ cut acrylic. The wind chime is structured to mimick the structure of a carousel, paying homage to the old amusement park that once existed and was lost alongside many valuable sites and communities in the wake of racism and gentrification.
