Caminho Novo
Caminho Novo is a temporary art intervention project that seeks to reactivate the abandoned lot at 374 Raymond Boulevard, Newark NJ. It was produced in collaboration with project partners, Nakayla Johnson and Leo de Paula. Through the means of extensive landscape work, mural installation, walkway installation, seating, and lighting, our site proposal serves as a temporary third-place/ resting area for the surrounding working-class community. Previously, the site used to be a flourishing community center up until it was demolished in 2009. Our proposal is meant to serve as a temporary intervention for the city’s abandoned plans of rebuilding the community center. Our visual language draws inspiration from this long history of the site/ surrounding area, as well as the predominantly Portuguese-speaking, immigrant, working-class population that still continues to grow in the East Ferry area. As the title implies in Portuguese, Caminho Novo is a new path to community.
